Lawmaker seeks to ban smoking in N.J. parks, on beaches
A New Jersey lawmaker wants smoking banned at public parks and beaches.
Sen. Barbara Buono announced the proposal Thursday, citing studies about the health risks of secondhand smoke and environmental concerns. The Middlesex County Democrat plans to introduce the measure when the Senate reconvenes later this year.
Some shore towns, including Belmar and Seaside Heights, already limit smoking to designated areas on their beaches. Belmar also is considering a complete smoking ban on its beaches and boardwalk, although some say that's unrealistic and could infringe on smokers' rights.
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced plans Monday to ban smoking in public parks and city beaches there.
