  • Schools chief to stay on in Cherry Hill

    David Campbell

By BARBARA S. ROTHSCHILD Courier-Post Staff

The school board has approved a one-year extension to Superintendent David Campbell's employment contract, taking it through the 2010-11 school year.

The extension, approved on Tuesday, continues Campbell's original four-year contract that began in July 2006. It raises Campbell's salary for the extension year to $287,101, but also includes [...]

According to the Courier Post’s Data Universe, Dr. Campbell’s 2008-9 salary was $262,930. This made him the second highest paid public educator in the state! If this article is accurate, he will be getting almost a $15K salary increase in 2009-2010, with a future limit of $287K. The $25K in cuts is offset by the $25K in salary increases.

The concern is that it appears that the school board converted one-time-charges, such as anual benefit perks into his base salary. If so, this is really an issue.

If Dr. Campbell’s pension plan is like most state officials, it is determined off of his base salary. This means, if he gets a $25K increase in salary, and he is at a low 75% annual pension payment, each year he is retired, the township will pay an additional $18K to him. If he collects his pension for 20 years, this one pay act alone could cost the township $18K x 20 = $360,000.

Only a fool or an idiot would turn down short-term pay losses in order to get long-term pay increases. Why would the board do this?

Alsop, the past school board was the ones that drove the reduction in IB. Why is the credit now being given to Dr. Campbell for this?

I would like to see the exact accomplishments Dr. Campbell performed and also a justification as to why he is probably now the highest paid public educator in the state!
