Benefits of Growing Your Own Food

With Summer almost here, it's the perfect time for all of our Cherry Hill readers to start thinking about the benefits of growing your own food.

Environmentalists have urged us all to save the earth by growing our own foods which helps to cut down on fuel costs and in turn, saves the environment.  Transportation costs alone of getting foods from the farm to the store are outrageous!  And with gas rising to almost $4 per gallon, who wouldn't want to consider starting a garden?

It's also quite possible that we will see the prices of produce rise as gas prices continue to rise.  So while taking to a bicycle or walking will help you to conserve gas, planting your own garden can also save you from spending more money on already pricey food items.

Grow Your Own Food
By growing your own food you'll not only be saving money, you'll also enjoy some of the additional benefits!

1.  Enjoy better tasting food!  Fresh food is the best food.  The longer the drive from the farm to the table, the less nutrient dense your food.  Not sure what we're talking about?  Simply compare the flavor of a home grown carrot or tomato with one purchased from the store.

 2.  Save money on groceries. Your grocery bill will shrink as you begin to stock your pantry with fresh produce from your backyard. A packet of seeds can cost less than a dollar, and depending upon the quality of the seeds, you can often dry them, and use them next year. Canning or preserving your surplus of produce will help you to continue to save on your grocery bills in the winter months too!

3.  Improve your family's health.  When you grow your own fruits and vegetables, you will be eating more fresh produce which will of course, improve your health.  Having these yummy items growing in your own backyard makes it simple and convenient for you to treat your family with flavorful and nutrient packed foods.

So get moving Cherry Hill!  Better yet, why not tell us about the garden you plan to start on this blog?
We'd love to hear from you.
