If big-box retailers aren't your thing, the ever-expanding business complexes along Haddonfield Road in Cherry Hill might look like a metastasizing eyesore.

"They're just clogging it all up. And now they want to put up all these apartments -- they've damaged the whole site," said Alene Ammond, a local activist and former state senator. "They just want to get in as much as they can in that space."

Few entrepreneurs deny that the retail attractions between Marketplace at Garden State Park at Route 70 and the Cherry Hill Mall at Church Road have been an economic boost to the area. But some wonder if the cost -- whatever that might ultimately be -- is worth it.

Road may get makeover

Construction continues in Cherry Hill at 818 Haddonfield Road

In an effort to make a busy traffic artery more pedestrian-friendly, the stretch of Haddonfield Road between Cherry Hill Mall and the Garden State Park shopping center may be in for improvements.

"We're limited by the location of current stores and by utilities, so widening the road isn't always an option," said township planner Natalie Shafiroff. "But creating better sidewalk facilities that are accessible to both pedestrians and bicycles is one of the ways to do that."

Township engineers will be soliciting public input at the mall today. They're considering changes against a backdrop of residential and retail growth that's fueled traffic along the road in recent years.

New eateries on Haddonfield Road

DSRiding down Haddonfield Road today, I noticed signs for two new restaurants. One is in behind Cheesecake Factory, where all of the new shops and construction is located, and the other is across the street.

Across the street there's a sign boasting a $5.99 All You Can Eat Buffet of pizza, pasta, salad and dessert. There isn't a whole lot of info, or even a sign on the building yet. (That's the top photo).

But the other, in the shopping center that already houses several retailers and restaurants, has a sign up that says Kabuki Japanese Restaurant. Behind it is the construction site that's still being worked on.

Are you excited about the new eateries, or is it just too much in one area of the township?

More new stores are popping up on an already bustling stretch of Haddonfield Road.

Construction is under way on a new Beneficial Bank, CiCi's Pizza and Chipotle Mexican Grill at 818 Haddonfield Road, across the street from Garden State Park.

Processing on parking permits is still ongoing, Cherry Hill officials said, but developer Jay Several of Several Properties Group hopes that the strip will be open for business by the holiday shopping season.
