Traffic worries may top Haddonfield Road survey

Chris LaChall/Courier-Post

If big-box retailers aren't your thing, the ever-expanding business complexes along Haddonfield Road in Cherry Hill might look like a metastasizing eyesore.

"They're just clogging it all up. And now they want to put up all these apartments -- they've damaged the whole site," said Alene Ammond, a local activist and former state senator. "They just want to get in as much as they can in that space."

Few entrepreneurs deny that the retail attractions between Marketplace at Garden State Park at Route 70 and the Cherry Hill Mall at Church Road have been an economic boost to the area. But some wonder if the cost -- whatever that might ultimately be -- is worth it.

Sex shop settlement steep for Cherry Hill

AL SCHELL/Courier-Post

AL SCHELL/Courier-Post

The township will pay $612,500 to a businessman who wanted to open an adult video store in the Barclay section.

And under a recently announced settlement, the would-be sex shop owner, Jim Restaino of Union County, has agreed to execute a deed that would bar any "sexually oriented business" from the site at Route 70 and Kenwood Drive, adjacent to a residential area.

The planned shop had sparked fierce opposition from its potential neighbors and other township residents, who joined in a campaign led by the Barclay Area Civic Association.

"We're thrilled that the adult store is not opening in front of our neighborhood," Theresa Mohrfeld, the association's secretary, said Monday. "I don't think that's the kind of business you want in the same place where children are playing."

Here’s a reason to love Route 70

Wawa1Wawa2

Want a reason why driving down Route 70 in Cherry Hill isn't too bad? Multiple Wawas!

You can run into one Wawa Food Market to take advantage of HoagieFest 2009 (also known as the best thing since sliced bread), and then, upon realizing you forgot to pick up a copy of the Courier-Post (how could you do that?!), run into the subsequent Wawa located merely blocks away. Plus they're on the same side of the street. Oh, the convenience!

Just another reason why South Jersey is awesome.

From Wednesday to July 31, about 75 municipalities will participate in the statewide effort. Each agency will receive a $4,000 state grant to step up patrols during the month.

Cherry Hill police will use the grant to pay for 20 additional police details in July along problem areas like Chapel Avenue, Springdale Road and parts of Route 70.
