Snow days throw school calendars out of whack

Douglas M. Bovitt/Courier-Post

By Barbara S. Rothschild, Courier-Post Staff

Snow days that create havoc for motorists, homeowners, workers and businesses also have the potential to turn school calendars into slippery slopes.

Most school districts plan ahead for makeup days when their school boards OK the following year's calendar, usually during the previous winter. But if snow days stretch beyond the usual one, two or even three days, it can throw school officials, parents and students into a limbo-land where the last day of school is uncertain, spring and summer vacation plans may be affected and even summer jobs could be in jeopardy.

NJSM Music Education Facts: #4

Did You Know?

Research shows that piano students are better equipped to comprehend mathematical and scientific concepts. A group of preschoolers received private piano keyboard lessons and singing lessons. A second group received private computer lessons. Those children who received piano/keyboard training performed 34 percent higher on tests measuring spatial-temporal ability than the others ‹ even those who received computer training. “Spatial-temporal” is basically proportional reasoning – ratios, fractions, proportions and thinking in space and time. This concept has long been considered a major obstacle in the teaching of elementary math and science.

Schools get ‘A’ for effort, report cards show

You don't have to spend a fortune to achieve excellence in education.

Figures released by the state Department of Education Tuesday in its annual school Report Card show that the highest-performing districts in the tri-county area often spend less per pupil than the state average for similar districts.

"The most important factor is the teacher in the classroom. That's what brings it home. We have no control over the money we get," said Joe Meloche, principal at Cherry Hill High School West.

John Ziomek/Courier-Post

By BARBARA S. ROTHSCHILD

Across South Jersey, schools are not just paying lip service to Black History Month with a token assignment or event.

Many schools have committees that plan events for every grade level, while teaching teams and individual teachers are finding ways to incorporate black history across disciplines. Districts have found that Black History Month offers extra opportunities to reinforce character education and expand service learning projects begun to observe Martin Luther King Day in January.

Patriotic spirit thrives at Cherry Hill school

By BARBARA S. ROTHSCHILD

Christmas and Hanukkah hues were part of the palette at a Sharp Elementary School assembly Tuesday morning, but the most important colors on display were the red, white and blue that stand for the United States of America.

Patriotism was the main order of the day as students presented hundreds of holiday cards to Rep. John H. Adler, D-N.J., who is taking a winter break from Capitol Hill. The Cherry Hill resident is delivering the cards -- crafted by Sharp students and others from schools throughout the district -- to patients at the Philadelphia VA Medical Center today.

Adler, in turn, had a much-appreciated gift for the school -- an American flag that flew over the Capitol Building on Nov. 17 at the congressman's request, and will now fly over Sharp.
