NJSM Music Education Facts: #4

Did You Know?

Research shows that piano students are better equipped to comprehend mathematical and scientific concepts. A group of preschoolers received private piano keyboard lessons and singing lessons. A second group received private computer lessons. Those children who received piano/keyboard training performed 34 percent higher on tests measuring spatial-temporal ability than the others ‹ even those who received computer training. “Spatial-temporal” is basically proportional reasoning – ratios, fractions, proportions and thinking in space and time. This concept has long been considered a major obstacle in the teaching of elementary math and science.

Across South Jersey, schools are not just paying lip service to Black History Month with a token assignment or event.

Many schools have committees that plan events for every grade level, while teaching teams and individual teachers are finding ways to incorporate black history across disciplines. Districts have found that Black History Month offers extra opportunities to reinforce character education and expand service learning projects begun to observe Martin Luther King Day in January.

How Early Can I Start Music Lessons for my son or daughter?
As a music teacher at the New Jersey School of Music in Cherry Hill, I hear this question quite often.  I usually answer with a series of other questions. Yea, I know that’s not what you want to hear, but it’s not as easy as just choosing an arbitrary age at which to start every child on every instrument.

Did You Know?

A ten-year study, tracking more than 25,000 students, shows that music-making improves test scores. Regardless of socioeconomic background, music-making students get higher marks in standardized tests than those who had no music involvement. The test scores studied were not only standardized tests, such as the SAT, but also in reading proficiency exams.

Music majors are the most likely group of college grads to be admitted to medical school. Physician and biologist Lewis Thomas studied the undergraduate majors of medical school applicants. He found that 66 percent of music majors who applied to med school were admitted, the highest percentage of any group. For comparison, (44 percent) of biochemistry majors were admitted. Also, a study of 7,500 university students revealed that music majors scored the highest reading scores among all majors including English, biology, chemistry and math.

Three Chinese principals from Shanghai secondary schools have been shadowing assistant principals and talking with teachers and students at local schools this week to gather ideas they can implement back home.

Next spring, their South Jersey counterparts will spend two weeks in Shanghai to shadow them and see Chinese educational concepts in action. The administrators hope they can adapt what they find to create innovations at their respective schools and discover common ground despite political differences.

"I have learned a lot about education here. The biggest surprise is that there is so much choice in your curriculum," said Wenguang Pan, principal at Shanghai Shinan High School. "Students can choose according to their own level. In China, we don't have so many courses and programs."

Dozens of teachers are picketing outside three South Jersey Catholic schools this morning to protest stalled contract negotiations.

The Catholic Teachers Union called the strike after failing to reach agreement with the Diocese of Camden on two key issues -- yearly salary increases and employee contributions for basic health care coverage, union leaders said.

Teachers at Camden Catholic in Cherry Hill, Paul VI in Haddon Township and Holy Spirtin in Absecon began striking at 7 a.m. and plan to continue the strike until contract talks resume.

Working on the premise that the quickest way to a young student's brain is through his or her stomach, 50 South Jersey teachers recently spent two hours stringing Froot Loop necklaces, assembling incredible fruit edibles and cooking up more ways to augment their lesson plans.

They were enrolled in "Cook and Book," the Garden State Discovery Museum's October offering from its monthly professional development workshops.
