Despite the blizzard, local and state authorities reported few major incidents through Wednesday midafternoon as many motorists chose not to brave the roads at all.

DENISE HENHOEFFER/Courier-Post

Camden County officials are asking motorists to stay off the roads until noon as South Jerseyans struggled against bitter cold temperatures and icy conditions that made shoveling and driving difficult and dangerous Thursday in the aftermath of a blizzard that dumped up to 20 inches of snow on the Garden State.

Reconstruction to shut some ramps on I-295

Several access ramps on Interstate 295 are to close this week as part of a highway reconstruction project.

One shutdown -- for a ramp connecting Old Broadway Avenue to northbound I-295 in Deptford -- is expected to last about six weeks for reconstruction, state officials said.

The other closings -- in Cherry Hill, Lawnside and Barrington -- will occur during night-time hours and should continue for a day or two, according to the state Department of Transportation.

Cuthbert Boulevard bridge closing near

Two lanes will be closed for utility work on a heavily traveled bridge here, officials say.

The shutdown is to start Monday for the center lanes on Cuthbert Boulevard between North Park Drive and South Park Drive. The lanes are expected to close for two to three weeks, but the duration will depend on weather conditions.

The lanes are being closed so utility crews can re-insulate a high-voltage line. The bridge connects Cherry Hill and Haddon Township and spans the Cooper River.

Traffic worries may top Haddonfield Road survey

If big-box retailers aren't your thing, the ever-expanding business complexes along Haddonfield Road in Cherry Hill might look like a metastasizing eyesore.

"They're just clogging it all up. And now they want to put up all these apartments -- they've damaged the whole site," said Alene Ammond, a local activist and former state senator. "They just want to get in as much as they can in that space."

Few entrepreneurs deny that the retail attractions between Marketplace at Garden State Park at Route 70 and the Cherry Hill Mall at Church Road have been an economic boost to the area. But some wonder if the cost -- whatever that might ultimately be -- is worth it.

Road may get makeover

Construction continues in Cherry Hill at 818 Haddonfield Road

In an effort to make a busy traffic artery more pedestrian-friendly, the stretch of Haddonfield Road between Cherry Hill Mall and the Garden State Park shopping center may be in for improvements.

"We're limited by the location of current stores and by utilities, so widening the road isn't always an option," said township planner Natalie Shafiroff. "But creating better sidewalk facilities that are accessible to both pedestrians and bicycles is one of the ways to do that."

Township engineers will be soliciting public input at the mall today. They're considering changes against a backdrop of residential and retail growth that's fueled traffic along the road in recent years.

The state is providing $250,000 in aid for improvements to Covered Bridge Road, township officials have announced.

Workers are to upgrade the heavily traveled street from Route 70 to Forge Road, said Cherry Hill Mayor Bernie Platt.

Bidding on the contract will take place in early spring of 2010 and construction will begin shortly after, Platt said.

Popular ‘cash for clunkers’ program ends tonight

Auto dealers will get more time to submit their Cash for Clunkers deals to the government for repayment after the Department of Transportation extended the deadline for filing claims.

Dealers will now have until noon Tuesday to file the paperwork they need to get repaid for the Cash for Clunkers credits of up to $4,500.

The Transportation Department says the extension is due to an overwhelming demand on the computer system set up to handle the claims. The Web site was shut down temporarily Monday afternoon because of the overload.

The deadline of 8 p.m. Monday still stands for the end of all Cash for Clunkers sales.
